CALL FOR 2 Long term EVS VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for 2 volunteers to host in Avilés (Asturias, North of Spain) for 9 months from October 2018 to the middle of July 2019The volunteers will develop their projects in El Patio, a youth participation project in cooperation with the Avilés City Council Youth Department.

Both volunteers will support the coordination of El Patio and their activities (running English workshops, cultural events, office work, etc.) as well as each having specific tasks depending on the individual’s role in the office. The specific role description is detailed below.

About El Patio

El Patio covers several projects relating to young people’s spare time, non-formal education, mobility, participation, and citizenship. It seeks to promote youth participation, social cohesion and responsibility at a local level through youth activities and youth committees involved in decision-making processes.

We are coordinated under the umbrella of the Avilés Youth Services and we work with young people from a wide range of ages (15-20 and 21-30), backgrounds and capacities – some of them with fewer opportunities- using non-formal education methods.

We organize activities for young people (workshops, leisure activities, civic education activities, english classes, radio, informative meetings, youth mobility activities, sexual education, etc) and we coordinate Youth Committees that are involved in the planning and implementation of monthly activities and seasonal programmes for other youngsters. At the moment we have four youth committees that address feminism, social theatre, urban gardening and youth music bands.

We accept volunteers with reduced mobility or special needs. Our accommodation and the office is adapted for wheelchair users.

Role description and tasks

We are seeking two people interested in helping us with our local participatory projects with young people. In particular, the volunteers will support mainly 2 specific projects: “Consejo de Infancia” and “Transit”.

El “Consejo de Infancia” (Children´s and Adolescent´s Council) of Avilés gathers children and young people from 9 to 17 years old to meet and work together on specific goals that focus on the improvement of the town from their point of view and to promote children’s rights. The project encourages children and youth participation and some of their proposals are discussed and supported by local authorities.

The “Transit” project runs a group educational processes based on non-formal methodologies and on a one to one coaching approach with young people in NEET situation or in risk of facing it.

The weekly tasks that the Volunteers will be in charge of are the following:

  • To coordinate and lead English language cafe and conversation groups on foreign languages for young people.
  • To support the design and facilitation of activities for young people.
  • To support the facilitation of “El Patio Youth Committee” meetings. These committees are in charge of designing and developing different spare time activities for other youngsters.
  • To build collaborative relationships with a wide range of stakeholders (youngsters, youth workers, politicians, teachers, families, etc.)
  • To help promote the activities by managing our social media channels, writing posts and small articles.
  • To support the activities developed in “Transit” projects (Volunteer 1)
    • To support the group dynamics created during the sessions.
    • To organize activities, together with the lead person of the project, connected with the topic of motivation, employment, coaching, etc.
    • To attend regular meetings with young people.
  • To support the activities developed in “Consejo de Infancia” (Volunteer 2)
    • To support the preparation of The European Meeting of Children´s councils.
    • To organize activities connected with different topics like domestic violence, children´s rights, refugees, etc.
    • To attend regular meetings with children.
    • To support teamwork during meetings.

The working schedule is between 30-36 hours a week. Normally Monday-Friday. Mornings from 10.00-14.00 and afternoons from 17.00-19.30. Days off are normally Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes we work on Saturdays, in which case the days off will be Sunday and Monday.

  • Motivated to work face to face with a wide range of young people in a collaborative way.
  • Interested in working with groups of youngsters and children using non formal methodologies.
  • Willing to be involved in a wide range of activities involving young people (outdoor activities, creative workshops, meetings) and sharing parts of their culture (language workshops, intercultural events, etc.)
  • Ability to develop and facilitate group activities and programs or motivation to learn to do it.
  • Open to new experiences and challenges.
  • Able to use social media, and IT.
  • Willing to work flexibly including some evenings and weekends.
  • A commitment to support colleagues and to work as part of a team.
  • Motivation to learn by doing.
  • Able to speak and understand some Spanish. (Recommended)

Volunteer 2: We are looking for a person to help us to develop a visual communication strategy to promote and disseminate our activities. In particular the volunteer will support us to design flyers, create small videos and take pictures of our activities and be in charge of boostering our social media (Facebook and blog) as well as everything that can help us to make our activities more visible.

The weekly tasks of Volunteer 2 will be in charge of are the following:

  • To coordinate and lead weekly English language cafe and conversation groups on foreign languages for young people.

  • To support the designing and facilitation of activities for young people.

  • To help in the creation of a visual communication strategy of the Youth Service activities.

  • To help promote activities by managing our social media channels, designing posters, writing posts and small articles.

  • To make videos and take pictures of our activities.

  • To build collaborative relationships with a wide range of stakeholders (youngsters, youth workers, politicians, teachers, families, environmental workers, environmental organisations, etc…).

The working schedule is between 30-36 hours a week. Normally Monday-Friday. Mornings from 10.00-14.00 and afternoons from 17.00-19.30. Days off are normally Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes we work on Saturdays then the days off will be Sunday and Monday.

General profile of the volunteers

Nuestra clase de italiano: ItaliaSi – ItaliaNo

Desde el 10 de febrero Pierpaolo Marchese, nuestro voluntario Europeo italiano lleva a cabo quincenalmente un taller de lengua y cultura Italiana en el Patio de juventud.

Hoy nos cuenta sobre ello en el blog.

Buenos días a todos, entre la distintas actividades del “Patio” hoy vamos a hablar de la case de italiano “ItaliaSi – ItaliaNo”. Una clase innovadora, no formal y abierta a todos, ¡una clase dónde la diversión está garantizada!

En la clase se tratan diferentes temáticas,como: gramática, música, arte, cultura, costumbres y tradiciones, etc…

En la primera sesión hemos empezado con un poco de gramática básica: pronombres personales y verbos “ser” y “haber”, procediendo después con un video de cultura italiana. Para terminar con un quiz de 10 preguntas sobre Italia.

En la segunda sesión hemos empezado con gramática básica: las tres conjugaciones de los verbos en italiano : ARE-ERE-IRE.  Después hemos visto un poco de cultura y arte, mostrando videos de la ciudad de Nápoles y diferentes cuadros de pintores italianos que los participantes tenían que adivinar.

La próxima sesión será el viernes 31 de Marzo a las 19.00 en el Patio de juventud, en la calle Fernando Morán, 26.

El tema del taller será “La comida italiana”. Los participantes deberan cocinar pizza y luego degustarla para escoger la mejor pizza de la tarde.

Os invitamos a venir y aprovechar esta oportunidad de conocer de cerca un país, como Italia, rico en cultura,historia y lengua. Porqué recordar… “una lengua diferente es una diferente visión de la vida” Federico Fellini.

¿Y después del SVE qué?

Muchos de nuestros voluntarios están llegando en estas semanas a la mitad de sus proyectos. Os traemos la experiencia de Cristina, voluntaria en Francia, sobre su evaluación intermedia, que es una semana obligatioria para todos voluntarios donde se reflexiona a cerca de todo lo que han hecho y les ha pasado en estos meses y, también, en relación a como pueden buscar motivación para los meses que les quedan.

A principios de febrero, del 6 al 9 tuvo lugar el seminario de mitad de proyecto en la ciudad de Narbona, al sur de Francia. En el primer seminario de llegada, además de todas las horas de espera en la estación una vez llegada a la ciudad, al final cancelaron todos los autobuses para llegar al albergue donde tenía lugar debido a una alerta naranja por temporal. Esta vez, para no variar, comencé con problemas de transporte, ya que al llegar a la estación de tren, pude comprobar que, debido a una huelga, habían cancelado el tren que mi tutor me había reservado ya hace tiempo, por lo que me dieron plaza para el siguiente, unas cuantas horas más tarde y llegando con todo empezado, pero como dicen los franceses… ce n’est pas grave! Cuando llegué me recibieron 32 sonrisas entre voluntarios y formadores, así que quieras que no, se te quitan todas las penas =D

Ya una vez entrados en materia, esta vez hemos sido un grupo muy numeroso de 29 voluntarios y 3 formadores, a los cuales ha sido un placer conocer (o volver a ver desde el primer seminario).

Lo bueno que tienen estas jornadas, es que siempre te llevas algo de todo el mundo y son días muy enriquecedores para todos. Muchas risas, buenos momentos y descubrimientos espirituales que te llevan a conocerte mejor a ti mismo y valorar mucho más todas las capacidades, competencias y potencialidades que tienes, además de tener la oportunidad de comprobar que no soy yo sola la que se pone blanca cuando le hacen la pregunta… “y después del SVE qué?”

Do you speak English?

Cada viernes a partir de las 17 h nuestros voluntarios llevan a cabo clases de conversación en inglés. El propósito de estas clases no es preparar a la gente para examenes oficiales si no intentar quitar la vergüenza a hablar en inglés, porque muchas veces es la única razón que  hace que la gente no intente comunicarse en inglés. Las clases duran una hora y media y el contenido se trasmite a través de actividades diferentes, sobre todo juegos. La edad de los participantes oscila entre 9 y 60 años, así que la única condición para participar es querer  venir. Ni la edad ni el nivel de inglés tienen importancia. Además es una buena oportunidad para conocer la gente nueva y pasarlo bien los viernes de tarde.

Este curso hemos trabajado sobre: como describir a las personas, características personales, direcciones, tipos de tiendas y mercancías, la Navidad, aprendimos sobre Commonwealth, cantamos villancicos en karaoke, hicimos un concurso de pronunciación y discutimos sobre la importancia de algunas profesiones.

No os preocupéis si tenéis miedo a no entender. Siempre hay posibilidad expresarse en español y si hace falta las actividades se explican también en español. Nuestros voluntarios tanto como los otros participantes que ya llevan tiempo con nosotros están preparados  para ayudaros durante las clases. No cuesta nada venir a echar un vistazo, pero creemos, cómo dice el lema de la oficina de turismo de Asturias, “ Si vienes, te quedas…”
